Four institutions do most of the deciding about who counts in hip-hop: the Grammys’ rap and R&B categories (rap’s first in 1989), the BET Hip Hop Awards (2006), XXL’s Freshman Class (2007) and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (first rap inductee in 2007). They do different jobs. The Grammys honor a year’s records, BET gives the culture its own televised night, XXL picks who to watch next, and the Hall enshrines careers at least 25 years in. This page covers what each one is, when it started and how it decides.

The Grammy rap and R&B categories (1989)
The Grammys are the oldest institution on this page. The first ceremony was held in May 1959, per Grammy.com, and rap had no category of its own until 1989.
Best Rap Performance, 1989. The category debuted at the 31st Grammy Awards. The first winner was DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince for “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” per Wikipedia’s category history. The award was not televised, and Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff led a boycott. LL Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa joined them. The following year, the award was televised and Young MC took it for “Bust a Move,” per American Songwriter. Smith later said his group’s problem was the 1989 show’s design, not the Grammys as an institution.
The performance category was later split into Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1991, per Grammy.com, then recombined in 2012 under the Best Rap Performance name, at the 54th Grammys.
Best R&B Album, 1995. Wikipedia’s category page dates the first award to 1995, with Boyz II Men’s II as the winner. From 2003 to 2011 a separate Best Contemporary R&B Album category covered the hip-hop-leaning side. After the 2011 season it was discontinued and those records moved back into Best R&B Album. In 2013 a sister category debuted under the title Best Urban Contemporary Album, which became Best Progressive R&B Album. At the 68th Grammys, on February 1, 2026, Leon Thomas won Best R&B Album for MUTT, per Grammy.com’s full winners list.
Best Rap Album, 1996. The first Best Rap Album went to Naughty by Nature for Poverty’s Paradise at the 38th Grammys, per Wikipedia. The Academy announced the category in 1995. By its category guidelines, an album qualifies with at least 51 percent playing time of newly recorded rapped performances.
Two names dominate the category’s record book. Eminem has six wins, from The Slim Shady LP (2000) through The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2015). Kendrick Lamar has four, from To Pimp a Butterfly (2016) through GNX (2026). Only two artists have won Best Rap Album in back-to-back years: Eminem has done it twice (2000-01 and 2010-11), and Kanye West once (2005-06), per Wikipedia.
How Grammy nominations work
The process is the same for rap and R&B, per the Recording Academy’s awards process page:
- Eligible members and registered media companies enter recordings online.
- Genre screening committees of more than 300 experts check each entry is in the right category. They do not judge quality.
- In first-round voting, Academy voting members choose the nominees. Most categories have five.
- Deloitte & Touche tabulates the ballots.
- In final-round voting, voting members choose the winners.
Voters are working professionals such as performers, songwriters, producers and engineers. Per the same page, each can vote in up to 10 categories across three genre fields, plus six General Field categories.
BET Hip Hop Awards (2006)
The BET Hip Hop Awards held their first ceremony on November 12, 2006, at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, hosted by Katt Williams. They are a televised show built only for hip-hop. The Grammys sort rap into a handful of categories inside a show for every genre; BET gives the whole night to the culture.
XXL Freshman Class (2007)
The XXL Freshman Class is an annual list from XXL magazine that puts 10 to 12 rising rappers on one cover and films them in a group cypher. It works as hip-hop’s unofficial rookie draft. XXL itself is older than the list. The magazine launched in August 1997, founded by James Bernard and Reginald Dennis, per Wikipedia’s XXL entry. The Freshman Class arrived ten years later, in 2007.
Three things make the format:
- A cover. Every selected artist shares one XXL cover, usually shot with a theme. XXL’s own cover archive runs from a 2007 “Leaders of the New School” cover to the 2026 class.
- A cypher. Each class films a cypher, a round of verses over a beat. Per XXL’s account of the 2024 shoot, verses have no required length, and the 2016 class cypher is the one people still cite.
- A tenth spot. One slot is decided by a fan vote. XXL says the class is otherwise chosen by its editors as names to know.
Is it a vote? Mostly not. XXL’s editors choose the artists. In 2024 the magazine said it “does not type out its Freshman picks on a list” and never has, in a post debunking a fake list. The public enters through the tenth spot, which fans decide. Per Wikipedia, there was no tenth-spot pick from 2007 to 2011, and in 2018 there was none because both selected artists declined it.
What does a cover mean? I read it as a bet, not a verdict. The list says “name to know,” not “best,” and the cypher is where that bet gets tested. The 2024 shoot showed the risk: one Freshman left minutes before the group cypher was filmed, and the argument about whether asking rappers to freestyle sets them up to fail played out in public afterward.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: every hip-hop inductee
The Hall’s rule is simple. Under the Rock Hall’s own voting guide, a performer becomes eligible 25 years after their first commercial recording. A nominating committee picks the ballot each year. Fans get a vote; a larger body decides.
The first hip-hop act was Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, inducted on March 12, 2007. The Hall’s own induction notes date their first 12-inch, “Superappin’,” to 1979. Jay-Z gave the speech. The group’s record is also a clean fit for the 25-year rule: 1979 to 2007 is 28 years.
Here is the timeline.
| Year | Inductee | Category |
|---|---|---|
| 2007 | Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five | Performer |
| 2009 | Run-DMC | Performer |
| 2012 | Beastie Boys | Performer |
| 2013 | Public Enemy | Performer |
| 2016 | N.W.A | Performer |
| 2017 | Tupac Shakur | Performer |
| 2020 | The Notorious B.I.G. | Performer |
| 2021 | Jay-Z | Performer |
| 2021 | LL Cool J | Musical Excellence |
| 2022 | Eminem | Performer |
| 2023 | Missy Elliott | Performer |
| 2023 | DJ Kool Herc | Musical Excellence |
| 2024 | A Tribe Called Quest; Mary J. Blige | Performer |
| 2025 | OutKast | Performer |
| 2025 | Salt-N-Pepa | Musical Influence |
| 2026 | Wu-Tang Clan | Performer; ceremony set for Nov. 14, 2026 |
| 2026 | Queen Latifah, MC Lyte | Early Influence |
Two turning points stand out.
First, the gap. After 2007 the Hall waited two years for Run-DMC, then three more for the Beastie Boys, and the rap inductees came a name or two at a time. The pace picked up from 2016: N.W.A, Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z and LL Cool J, Eminem and Missy Elliott all followed within seven years.
Second, the category. Several of the most important rap figures have gone in through the side doors: Musical Excellence, Musical Influence, Early Influence. I think that is the Hall’s most interesting habit. The side doors let it honor founders and pioneers whose catalogs do not fit a rock-style performer ballot. They also mean a “Hall of Famer” tag means different things depending on the door.
Why institutional recognition matters
These bodies write the record future readers will lean on. A Grammy win, a Hall plaque or a Freshman cover goes into a biography and stays there. They also disagree with each other. The Grammys can reward an album years after the culture moved on; XXL tries to be early; the Hall is deliberately late, by its own 25-year rule.
I would rather read them as three different clocks than as three rankings. XXL tells you who people are watching now, the Grammys tell you who the industry voted for, and the Hall tells you who the culture could not leave out. Argue about each, but know which clock you are reading.
FAQ
When did the XXL Freshman Class start? In 2007. The magazine itself launched in 1997, and the list skipped 2008.
Who won the first Grammy for Best Rap Album? Naughty by Nature, for Poverty’s Paradise, at the 38th Grammys in 1996.
Is XXL Freshman a vote? Mostly no. Editors choose the class, and fans decide the tenth spot. There was no tenth-spot pick from 2007 to 2011.
Are the Grammys good for hip-hop? I think the answer is “increasingly, and late.” Rap went from a non-televised category in 1989 to a field with several awards, and the same Academy gave Best Rap Album to Kendrick Lamar’s GNX in 2026. The record is better than the reputation, but the 1989 boycott is still the part people remember.
